The central Iowa community suffered a heart-wrenching loss this past week, when two police officers from two different communities were shot at point-blank range by an assailant. While this is an uncomfortable topic for many, we must address the root cause of why this type of event could happen in our community, or any community.
Human behavior can be a complicated thing.
As a graduate of the West Des Moines Citizens’ Police Academy, the horrendous events surrounding these incidents struck me especially hard. As a Citizens’ Academy graduate, we have taken the oath to be the eyes and ears of our community and to promote honor and respect for peace officers. The following piece was written in honor of all of our officers, and to our fallen brothers, I say this: “Rest in peace, good and faithful servants. We shall carry on in your honor.”
